Surf Bagel came to be from a love of the ocean combined with the search for the perfect bagel. It all began when Dave Vitella had the desire to be closer to his family and community. He decided to leave his firefighting job in Maryland, which involved a lengthy commute and time away from his family. With a love for bagels and a passion for surfing, Dave decided to combine the two seemingly distinct obsessions! Surfing Hatteras and Hawaiian waters for years, Dave and his fellow surfers relied on bagels to refuel and catch more and more sessions. The irony of the bagel search was never lost on Dave... it is the same quest a true surfer undertakes thoughout his/her life; the search for the perfect wave.
After creating a solid menu and a cool place to hang out and eat, it became apparent that the "locals" enjoyed the vibe that Dave and his staff were sending! As a matter of fact, business became so strong that Dave invited his brother Tom to join him to continue to grow Surf Bagel. For Tom, it was a natural extension to his career as a sales rep to the surf market. The last 14 years of Tom's career were spent with Reef Sandals and other companies which served surf retailers. Surfing has always been a huge part of the four Vitellas' lives: one of which, Steven, founded the popular Hodad's Restaurant in Avon on Cape Hatteras Island.
After years of traveling the world in pursuit of the best surf, Tom and Dave have experienced some of the coolest places to eat and chill. As a result, Surf Bagel has infused some of that multi-cultural flavor into their recipes and restaurant. The desire to provide the most healthy, tasty and honest food, along with the best service, has always been their main goal. So drop in and enjoy...Mahalo!
